3  7-27-04 This is great, but I wish you had it on a hand held device so I had it with me when I am reading my bible. It is hard to run to the computer each time I need to hear a word. Do you know of anything like this that is available. Thanks CRBC511

6 12-25-04 I was wondering if you cared if I took the listing of pronunciations and sound files from your site in order to compile a computer program to make it easier and faster to search for pronunciations? It is for a Sunday school class, and may be distributed to other church members on a CD with all the sound files and the program to search through them. I will be sure to give your site credit for it.  Mr .Chester

8    1-5-05 I use your site frequently - I am a Lector and most of them have no
clue how to pronounce the biblical words.  Thanks for your site!

My current problem is Latin, not biblical.  I once found the
pronunciation on the internet but cannot find it again.

The word is "ligamen."  I am sure that once I found it as "lig' a men"
(accent on first syllable) because I marked it on a sheet of paper so I
would not forget it.   Now, however, people at the Tribunal pronounce
it "Li gah' men" (accent on the second syllable).  Can you help?

Whether you can or not, thanks much,
Georgene Sorenson

Hello,

First met me say THANK YOU!!!! Your site is a blessing!!!!!!!!!!

Can you tell me how to pronounce the name Obadiah?

I am also looking for some 30 minute Bible lessons that I can use for a chapel lesson for about 100 kids. I teach at a private Christian school and I am looking for some creative lessons. The other teachers come up with cute and entertaining ideal and mine are not always creative and new. I live in Houston so if you have a store I can come in.

Thank you so much,

I am a new pastor, having just gotten my Masters degree last August. This site has been absolutely wonderful for me. I have looked up so many scripture words. It is hard to remember how the professors pronounced many of the words. This site is invaluable and I thank you so much.

God Bless you always and in all ways!

16 1-28-05 Hi Brian,

I find your Bible pronunciation web site very helpful as I teach a children's Sunday School class.  My fourth graders like learning to pronounce the names in our Bible stories.

I love the pen and ink drawings of Jesus and the children on this web site.  Would really like to have some of them to display in our children's department.  Can you tell me where I might find them?

Thank you  and have a great day!

Great site – thanks!

A few questions – I found your site when trying to do a bible study on retirement (prompted by our study of The Purpose Driven Life) – any suggestions?

Also, I noticed the pencil drawings.  Do you know the source, or where prints of these can be purchased?  Our church is interested in using them in our children’s area.

Thank you for your help!

 Kindest regards,

Sheri

26 3-14-05
Thanks, personally asked - personally shared them with my kids in classes I teach 3-6, 6-9 - everyone loved them - but then when the church gets to many of thousands....  someone wanted to use them - then someone (probably a lawyer) asked "where can we get them?"...i've asked any sources i've seen them on or gotten them through - nobody knows. if i find out, i'll let you know.
any biblical retirement guidance?
27 3-15-05 Dear Brian,

How do you phonetically pronounce saraph?

Diana
28 3-15-05
Several parts of the purpose driven life talk about how retirement is not a biblical principal...  also somewhat mentioned in a Christian money management video series our church is doing...  however, it still seems important to save for retirement...  any suggested sources?

I dreamed last night of putting the pencil drawings in my kids playroom in the basement - thanks for the encouragement

May God's love and peace and blessings flow upon you and your family

 Kindest regards,

Sheri

Dear Brian,
I\'m under the impression that it is the English language that possesses the broad \'a\' sound, the long \'i\' sounds in language. Your pronounciation of Zechariah, with iah as a long \'i\' sound, when in actuality, the \'i\' sound should be short and the \'ah\' should be more of a \'k\' sound.  Same for Mary. The \'a\' should be a short sound.  I\'m interested in the \'original\' sounds of the ancient biblical pronounciation.  Can you help me further?

37 4-9-05  Dear Brian,

My pastor has given me information about a word that contradicts this website, so I am curious if there are alternate pronunciations for the name \"Tamar\"? He said it has soft A\'s and an accent on the second syllable; info I can find  online (including your site and fa few others) suggests the accent is on the first syllable and that a hard \"AA\" sound is  in the first syllable. How should I read this word in church? I would like to say it right but I also don\'t want to make anyone feel uncomfortable. Thanks!

Brian,
I am the friend who Paula emailed you has cancer.
Never give up hope! Never!
That is the biggest mistake you can make.
Put your trust in God and reach out for prayer...I believe it is the prayers of all the people who prayed for me...I don't even know how big the circle was...their prayers unleashed God's power to heal me and I believe I am being healed as we speak...my brain lesions have already disappearred.
All things are possible with God.
I pray that he heals you mentally, spiritually, & PHYSICALLY.
I don't think I realized I need healing mentally and spiritually until God did it...
I'd appreciate an update when you feel like it...I have an awesome prayer chain that prayed for me that I will send a request to for you.

for your Bible pronounciation sites!  I\'ve been using them for a long time and passed them on to other lectors in my parish.
Today I felt the urge to email you as I practiced the reading I will be proclaiming at tomorrow\'s Mass - Paul to the Romans 16:3-9, 22-27.  I count 12 names, only three of which I had correct on my first instinct!  It pains me to listen to lectors who fudge the names.  I really appreciate your wonderful web sites!
Blessings,
Georgene Sorenson
93 11-4-05 Dear Brian,
Thank you so much for your fabulous website aiding lectors like myself with the pronunciation of difficult biblical names. I am reading tomorrow and printed the reading with no less than six phonetic spellings in the margin.
I will surely say a prayer for your successful cancer treatment.

95 11-14-05 Dear Brian,
Maccabees 6:17 refers to \"...the title Eupator\".
I could not find a pronounciation of Eupator in your dictionary, but I think it is pretty straight forward.
I wish to thank you for having a place to go for reference when I am asked to be a proclaimer of the word in our church. I try to be as accurate as I can and your web site is certainly a great help.
As you certainly know, it can be somewhat of a difficult undertaking at times for some of us.

Motivating Appreciative Comments & Suggestions Below for 2006 & 2007

102 1-4-06 Brian:
A few months ago, my daughter had a question regarding the words mene, tekel, and peres from a passage in the Book of Daniel.  At that time, I discovered your website and found both the phonetic and vocal  pronunciations which was quite helpful.  I was mentioning your site to a friend of mine, but in checking the site today, I don\'t remember how I got to a particular word.  I don\'t seem to be able to get the alphabetical list I remember when scanning down.  Any suggestions what I might be doing wrong?
Thanks,
Joe Finlay
103  1-5-06   Brian,
I\'m looking for a bible passage that would be appropriate for a baby announcement.  Our first grandson was born at midnight on Christmas morning and the mother wants to put a little message at the bottom of the announcement.  If you know a good website I could access that could help me, I would very much appreciate it. BTW, I use your pronunciation site all the time when I read at church.  It\'s been a big help.  Thank you.

Hi Brian:
Thanks for the quick response.  In the meantime last night, I realized I had my Zonealarm firewall activated, which can sometimes cause problems of this nature.  Sure enough, I shut down Zonealarm and all of the information for names from A to Z showed up on Site 1 with the wav files available for audio.  This may prove helpful if you get this question again from someone else.

Thanks again for your help.  Anyone involved in lectoring or reading biblical passages, particularly those from the Old Testament, should definitely have your website bookmarked.  Some of those Old Testament names and words can really tie a reader in knots, particularly if they haven’t at least first looked over the material.

Hi Brian:
I tried your website, but I have the same problem in that the full page does not show on my computer without using a horizontal scroll. I have never gotten into web page design, but I understand this is where the problem may have originated.  I'm not sure why it would show full page without the horizontal scroll on one computer and not another.  I have my monitor set to a very high resolution for my AutoCAD work, but it doesn't seem to make any difference and I'm not sure whether I can do anything more.
I'm not familiar with Microsoft FrontPage.  However, I did hit a couple of interesting sites which talk about design of a web page and what to look for in avoiding the necessity for a horizontal scroll of the page.
If I happen on anything else, I'll let you know, but my priorities right now don't involve website design.
Good luck,
Joe Finlay

Hi - I\'m studying  1 Kings 11:26-40. I looked up the pronunciations of some names in Strong\'s, then I also listened to them at your website. The pronunciations on your website are different than what I get from Strong\'s (at least, as I am understanding Strong\'s). Why is that? example: jeraboam = yaw-rob-awm in Strong\'s, with an accent on the awm.
Thanks.

130   2-21-06  Mr. Nelson, Thank you so much for your quick reply, I'm sorry I didn't make myself clear, I read from the "Living with Christ" little missal, it has daily readings for us lectors to read from, and it'll read  First Reading (Joel 2:12-18) and I'll address it as, "The First Reading is from the Prophet Joel, but the Second Reading (2 Corinthians 5:20-62)  I don't know how to address it, I don't know if they are prophets, Letters and since you have such an extensive website, I thought I could find it in your audio bible, but I can not or don't know how to click to it, Oh! I'm sorry I bothered you, you are such a busy and important person, I'll just go thru the bible and see if I can find it, I wanted a list of the names of the Prophets, etc. and I guess I'm still not making myself clear, forgive me.  Thank you anyway,  and God Bless you for all you do for us to enjoy, I love your bible pronunciation,   Yolanda

142 3-5-07 Dear Brian,
The translation of the text of the New Testament has been a great concern of mine for many years. As of yet I have not had a chance to find a good book on this topic. I found your website through a search engine. I love it whenever I hear something cool about a Greek word. But I wonder why some pastors can tell you so many neat things about N.T. Greek and yet so few Bibles ever even mention these things.  I\'ve done some limited research ( I say limited because I cannot read Greek and my Hebrew is very limited.) on Psalms 53:1; Matt. 1:2, 4:9, 5:4, 5:44, 6:9-13, 7:1, 7:7; Matt. 8:1, Matt.16:18-19, Matt. 18:18, Matt. 25:13, 26:22, Matt. 28:19; John 3:7, John 3:16, Romans 1:1, 1:25, 6:6, 10:4; 1 Thess. 5:22, and others.
It seems to me that almost all bibles, even the so-called \"literal translations\", fall short.  I guess one could do EXEGESES outside of a translation, but one would
need to know what to do. At the same time I am always looking for a truly LITERAL of the bible that only has interpretations when needed. Indeed there should be no opinions of the translator accept in footnotes when the text is unclear.  It would be wonderful and a joy to me if some scholars- who know the biblical languages of Hebrew, Aramaic and Greek- and did not have to always look it up in a concordance or lexicon- could make a translation of the bible that reveals all its richness!!!!!!!!!!!!!
TRANSLITERATION is good as it make it clear to the reader when there may come a time when they may not know what the literal word means. Please understand that it is my greatest desire to find a bible that is translated as best as possible. I may not be able to pass college English grammar, but that does not mean that I take the way the bible is translated lightly. There are puns, verbs, and idioms that need to be translated correctly and understandably. Even in the Gospels and Acts there are places where text says what language is being used. It would just be nice to be able to find answers to my questions and quest. Thank you for your time and help. Feel free to ask me any questions that would help you help me better. Thanks again.

I have not fully read your page but so far, i want to thank you for educating people about God. 153  6-10-07 Dear Brian,
Your website on prouncing difficult Bible names, etc. is such a blessing for me.  I teach Middlers in Sunday School and had always felt inadequate when assisting them with reading the scriptures because of the inability to pronounce difficult words in the Bible.  My hearing loss also made this difficult because I wouldn\'t hear certain sounds.  Your website is wonderful because the prounciations and the division of the words made it easier for me to sound and say.  It has made a difference in my teaching.  Thank you so much.
Regina Adams
154 6-21-07 Hello Brian,
I accidentally stumbled upon your site and I really thank God. You see, I\'m a Sunday School teacher but being Chinese without a powerful English foundation, I find pronounciations of some words difficult.
The ability to hear the bible from your site is indeed such a blessings.
One suggestion though, is that if it is possible for the word to be pronounced again when we click on it. This is because I did not manage to hear the word well and do not have the time to go through the entire passage again.
I want to thank you again and I want you to know that I am sending this site to all my friends, Sunday school kids, and fellow teachers. On behalf of them, thanks a million.
Blessings,
Christina Wong FL
155  6-26-07 Dear Brian,
I don\'t find this saint\'s name on any of your pages.  I love your help on these word pronunciations!  I can\'t live without it.   I wish I could convince the Lector-selection committee to refer all our lectors to your web sites.
We have just started a new feature for daily Mass - the lector announces what feast day it is every day there happens to be one,  i.e.,  \"Good Morning.  Welcome to our Eucharistic Celebration on this feast of . . . .\"
Working now on July, the 24th is Sharbel Makhluf and I can\'t find the pronunciation of his name ANYWHERE.  Knowing from experience that things don\'t always sound as they look, how would you pronounce this name?  I would say \"Shar\' behl Mahk\' luhf or Mahk Luhf\'
Any ideas?
Thanks and many blessings,

157 6-29-07 Dear Brian,
I just want to say thank you for this site!  I have it bookmarked and have used it mnay times as I want to pronounce words correctly in my sermons and talks.
I was wondering if you could add another word to your list?  I would like to know how to pronounce \"Gershom\" Moses\' first son.  Thank you again for all of your time into putting this EXTREMELY helpful resource together!
Mike Brayton
158 7-1-07Dear Brian,

Perhaps it\'s just last-minute, early Sunday morning syndrom for me, and it looks like you have a wonderful resource here of biblical names and words, however for every section I clicked, it just brought me back to the same page.  For example, when I cliked on the yellow box indicated \"Click here\", it just returned me to the original screen.

I did find useful the printed version and phonetical spellings of some words found toward the bottom of your site, however when I attempted to look up the name Nimshi, this alphbetical listing did not include this part of the alphabet.

As my family and I are frequent lay readers at our church, I foresee using this site on a regular basis, and would appreciate any help you would provide.

Thanks so much,

Dear Herman,   Thanks for your response. What website did you find me on?  See below.    Your questions is a good one. It is a bible verse we have discussed from time to time.

Here is the best interpretation I can give you.   It is possible that this disciple was not asking permission to go to his fathers funeral burial but  rather to put off following Jesus until his elderly  father died.  Perhaps he was the firstborn son and wanted to be sure to claim his inheritance. Perhaps he didn't want to face this father's wrath if he left the family  business to follow an itinerant preacher. Whether his concern was financial security family approval or something  else he did not want to commit himself to Jesus just yet.

Jesus however would not accept his excuse ( which was a very good one that almost everyone would accept. Of course Jesus knew everything that was going on in his mind.)  Jesus was always direct with those he wanted to follow him. He made sure they counted the  cost and set aside any  conditions they might have for following him. As  God's Son Jesus did not hesitate to demand complete loyalty.  Even family loyalty was not to be taken priority over the demands of obedience. His direct challenge forces us to ask questions about our own priority in following him. The decision to follow Jesus should not be put off even though other loyalties compete for our attention. Nothing should be placed above a total commitment to living for him.

Herman, I hope the this might help you. Let me know if it does. Even after this explanation I  still find it difficult to understand  how the dead can bury their dead. I guess once you are gone you are gone. It is just a physical body.  Hopefully this will remind me to get busy and find the paper work to donate my body to science which is my preference to burial.
I have no great desire in having people look at my grave. My wife Rosemary feels the same way. I keep forgetting to do that. Your letter may have been Gods reminder to do that.  God works in such interesting ways.  Thanks. Call me if you want to discuss it further.   Brian Nelson 713-467-3025.
